1. How do you add a welcome message on the front as in the example attached. Currently on my site, the first thing which shows up is the Available courses and I would like to add a welcome message.
2. I would like to change some of the basic wordings on moodle for example
a) "My Courses" to "My Tutoring Sessions"
b) "No courses in this category" to "No Tutoring sessions"
c) "Available Courses" to "Current Sessions"and similar changes like the aboves, where can I make this changes.
3. How can I change the default moodle favicon
Thank you

Welcome to the forums.
Questions 1 and 2 are not theme related, but I should be able to help you nonetheless.
1.) Login as an administrator and go to Admin > Front Page > Front Page Settings. There you will find an option box labeled "Include a topic section." Check that box and save changes.
Then, return to your front page and "turn editing on." You should see a small edit link appear on the left side of the middle column (screenshot attached).
2.) While logged in as an administrator, go to Admin > Language > Language editing.
Then, click the "Edit words or phrases link. While I don't know for certain, I believe the strings you want to edit are in moodle.php.
3.) Inside your theme folder is an image named favicon.ico. Replace this with any .ico file with the same name.
There are a lot of favicon generators on the internet if you do not have one already. Just Google "favicon generator" and you should get a number of sites offering such a service.
