This new theme, Vitality, which is just about done now uses the same compromise you mention. Fixed-width front page; fluid-width course pages. The reason for this is to accommodate an image in the header of the front page, yet allow for maximum screen real estate in the course pages.

All and all, the themes coming out of here in the near future will probably use this model or be completely fluid-width.
